Psychotherapy - Improving Quality of Life One Session at a Time

Psychotherapy, alternatively known as “Counseling” or “Therapy”, is a method of addressing mental health concerns through successive consultation sessions. Psychotherapy begins after the initial consultation and assessment (click here to learn about assessments).

During psychotherapy sessions, you and your therapist will effectively address your presenting issues by:

  • Developing clear goals to achieve through the sessions.
  • Fostering a positive and trusting working relationship between therapist and client.
  • Developing awareness of issues being faced and how to effectively address them.
  • Understanding the biological, psychological, and social factors to your mental health functioning.
  • Learning new and useful skills in managing your mental health.
  • Cultivating alternative and helpful practices in daily life to effectively tackle your presenting issues.

Sessions may be catered to your needs in a variety of ways: either to reduce symptoms in a short span of time, to address long-standing issues that you’re facing, and/ or to learn skills in improving on the things that matter to you, along with your overall quality of life.

Our team members engage in evidence-based practice. As such, your therapist will only promote, facilitate, teach, and/ or provide advice which are shown to be effective from best available research in addressing your presenting issues.

There is strong evidence to conclude that psychotherapy is an effective method of addressing a variety of psychological issues and to improve a person’s quality of life.

The American Psychological Association (2012) passed a resolution highlighting such effectiveness. It includes a reference list of research studies that demonstrated its effectiveness in a variety of psychological issues and settings.

Click here to read the resolution and/ or to find out more about these studies.

Treatment duration will be dependent on a variety of factors, such as the nature and severity of the presenting issues, treatment goals, and cost/ lifestyle considerations. Conventionally, sessions are done on a weekly basis. Depending on the factors mentioned, sessions can also be done based on the client’s availability (e.g. once every two weeks, once a month).

Short-term psychotherapy is defined as having 12 sessions or less. Oftentimes, short-term therapy can be effective in addressing specific and targeted goals. Click here to learn how to make the best use of short-term psychotherapy.

Whether you are keen on short-term or longer term therapy, there is evidence to show that the psychotherapy process is helpful in addressing mental health issues (click here for an example of short-term therapy outcomes, and click here for an example of long-term therapy outcomes). Clients will usually report significant improvement in their functioning a few sessions in.

Treatment is always collaborative. While your therapist may have recommendations on the frequency of sessions to effectively meet your goals, you are able to choose the frequency and amount of sessions that you would like to have. Your therapist will collaboratively alter your goals with you so that they can be effectively met through the session(s). Similarly, you and your therapist will be able to work towards ending of treatment based on what you think is best.

Ultimately, therapy sessions are your choice. Kindly discuss with your therapist in arriving at the best arrangement in meeting your needs.
