Start With An Assessment.
All psychological services first begins with an assessment.
During the initial consultation, your psychologist will first ascertain the nature of your presenting issues. This would include asking for information with regards to symptoms related to your mental health. An assessment is also made on the extent of how it is affecting your daily life.
Your psychologist will then invest time in understanding your background. This may include information regarding your years growing up, your family and social relationships, educational and employment history, and your physical health. The reason for doing so is to have a comprehensive awareness of what factors could possibly contribute to your concerns. Furthermore, this could also assist in identifying personal strengths that can be used to improve your mental health.
By the end of the consultation, your psychologist will be able to advice regarding your mental health concerns. You will then collaborate with the professional in developing goals in treating the issues faced. Then, your psychologist will also be able to answer questions that you may have.
If required, recommendations for further assessment will be provided.

By the end of the initial consultation, you will be able to have an understanding of your presenting issues. Your psychologist will be able to explain what is contributing to your concerns, and how he or she is able to collaborate with you in addressing them. You will be provided a clear road map on how future sessions will look like. If you have any questions, do feel free to also address them with your psychologist.
Usually, mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, explosive anger, physical complaints with a psychological nature (psychosomatic), and also social issues (i.e. relationship issues, trouble at work) affecting the client can be effectively assessed during the initial consultation. As such, further assessment may not be required. Instead, treatment planning and counseling can take place.
Your psychologist will be able to advice accordingly.
Some mental health issues which affects a person’s cognitive abilities would require further assessment. This may include the administration of standardized cognitive testing, as well as other tests deemed necessary to rule out concerns which are neurodevelopmental in nature.
Further assessment may be necessary to rule out the diagnoses of:
- Intellectual Disability
- Autism (Adult)
- ADHD (Adult)
- Specific Learning Disorder (e.g. Dyslexia, Dyscalculia)
In some cases, clients have also requested for an assessment to determine giftedness (e.g. High IQ).
We only provide assessments for clients within the age of 16 – 54 years old. Your psychologist will be able to advice accordingly.
Should you undergo further assessment, your psychologist will schedule a follow-up appointment with you. During the follow-up, you may be required to complete a variety of tasks, questionnaires, or to provide relevant information. The duration of the assessment will depend on the extent of tests used.
Once further assessment is completed, your psychologist will then prepare a detailed psychological report highlighting the findings. This may take up to a week. A briefing session is then scheduled between you and the psychologist.
During the briefing, your psychologist will share with you the test findings. The professional will be able to explain in depth regarding your mental functions, diagnosis (if any), and recommendations on what can be done to address them. You are able to bring up any questions that you may have about the findings with your psychologist. You may also collaborate with your psychologist in treatment planning and counseling.
A copy of the psychological report will also be provided to you.
